First 10 Million EUR for Reconstruction of Water Supply Network in Sarajevo arrive next Year

water-supply-sarajevoAccording to the planned dynamics, after completion of all necessary procedures in the EBRD, the loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development intended for reconstruction of water supply network at the territory of the Sarajevo Canton should be received in June next year.

As it was stated at yesterday’s meeting between the Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton Elmedin Konaković, ministers in the Government, and management of the enterprise Water Supply and Sewerage with the Director of EBRD Office in BiH Ian Brown, signing of the contract is announced for April next year. thus, the first 10 million EUR out of 30 million EUR in total will be at disposal for first, most urgent interventions on water supply infrastructure.

Enterprise Water Supply and Sewerage emphasized that those zones are mostly found in the city center – the locality of Skenderija, area around the Eternal Flame, wider area of Marijin Dvor. There is a special need for reconstruction of pump stations in Bačevo and Alipašino Polje. Currently in progress is the detection of situation of water supply network at the entire territory of the Canton and according to results and urgency assessment the funds for reconstruction will be allocated.

“We know that indebtedness with international creditors has its rules. As we have been told, according to the planned dynamic the money will be on our account in spring. The Sarajevo Canton is ready to allocate funds for commencement of construction even before the loan arrives, while we are waiting for the ratifications of the contract by higher levels of authority,” said Prime Minister Konaković.

Arrival of loan funds from EBRD to the Sarajevo Canton, when it comes to reconstruction and investment in utility economy, is divided into several segments. In addition to this currently the most important loan for reconstruction of water supply network, the EBRD also announced the financing of a special Action Plan that will make a comprehensive overview of all utility services and define what actions have to be taken where in order to improve the situation, with emphasis on those fields that contribute to the environmental protection.

Production and usage of thermal energy, warming of buildings, increased use of renewable energy sources, efficient waste management – these are only some of the targeted aims of this study. Activities on the study will begin in May next year and it will take six months to complete.
