Germany Plans Air Bridge to Deliver Humanitarian Aid to Gaza Strip

Germany plans to set up an airlift to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip with the support of Jordan, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said.

The operation is expected to begin “immediately,” he said after a meeting of the Security Cabinet in Berlin.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will work closely with France and the United Kingdom, countries that have expressed their willingness to join the effort to transport food and aid, Merz said.

“We know that this can only be a small help for the people of Gaza. But at least it is a contribution that we are happy to make,” the chancellor said.

Severe food and water shortages in Gaza have prompted warnings from UN agencies of “catastrophic hunger” and the risk of imminent famine in the closed Palestinian territory.

Jordan has served as a key hub for humanitarian aid to Gaza and has been delivering food to the territory by parachute for the past two days.
