Haris Medunjanin retires from BiH National Football Team

After playing against Senegal in a friendly this week, Philadelphia Union midfielder Haris Medunjanin has retired from representing BiH in the football competitions.

“This is my last match in the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and made this difficult decision. We have to think about the future, there are a lot of good players here. The fact that we did not qualify for the World Cup is a sign that we, older players like me, need to give the younger guys a chance and I want them success in the coming period,” said Medunjanin on his social media.

Medunjanin, 33, was born in Sarajevo but fled his country as a boy when war broke out in the country. After settling in the Netherlands, he represented the Dutch at the youth international level, but wished to represent the country of his birth after FIFA rules were changed to allow for one-time switches. He made his debut in 2009, as Bosnia and Herzegovina narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, but they triumphed four years later, playing in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
