He Left New York for Sarajevo: American Reveals What Stunned Him During His First Visit to BiH

American David Levine traded the busy streets of New York for Sarajevo, where he moved with his Bosnian and Herzegovinian (BiH) wife, and in a clip that went viral on TikTok, he revealed what shocked him during his first visit to BiH.

Namely, David shared his story for the YouTube channel RahatLand, and the clip shared on their TikTok profile has garnered tens of thousands of views and made many people laugh.

The video captures David as he talks about what his first encounter with BiH culture looked like, and how during his first visit to his wife’s family home, he thought her mother was scooping water for coffee from the toilet with a dzezva, when in fact, she was just dumping out the coffee grounds.

“I’m just sitting there, everyone is going about their business. They go into the kitchen to make coffee. I see her mom walking down the hallway carrying a dzezva and I see her going into the bathroom and lowering the dzezva into the toilet. I look around and wonder, did she really just grab water from the toilet for the coffee?” David says in the video.

He admitted he was taken aback and wondered what was going on.

“I’m sitting there, she goes into the kitchen. Meli comes back and I tell her: ‘I just saw your mom go into the bathroom with a dzezva and put it in the toilet.’ She replies: ‘Yeah, of course.’ I say: ‘What do you mean of course? That’s disgusting,'” he said further.

He admitted that they didn’t understand each other at all and that she couldn’t understand why it was disgusting to him. His wife tried to explain that her mother had just dumped the coffee grounds, but he thought she had rinsed it so it would be clean for the water.

“I’m freaking out, and she can’t figure out what’s unclear to me. In the end, I gave up and said: ‘Okay, fine.’ Then I told her I thought she scooped the water out of the toilet. When she told her mom that I thought she grabbed water from the toilet, she was so embarrassed and died laughing,” he said.

He admitted that the funniest part of the story was when he made peace with the idea that he was going to drink water from the toilet.
