Taekwondo national team members of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Benjamin Husic and Ada Avdagic, achieved a historic result for BiH taekwondo by winning medals at the World Under-21 Championships, which began on Thursday in Nairobi (Kenya).
In the statement of the Press Service of the Taekwondo Association of the Federation of BiH (FBiH), it is noted that the two young BiH national team members won bronze medals, and that there remains regret over the missed opportunity to compete in the final of the World Taekwondo U21 Championships.
Despite that, the achieved result is the best in the history of taekwondo and represents the first medals from such a world event.
Husic was free in the first round in the under-74-kilogram category, and then defeated the Greek national team member Alexandros Barkof 2:0 in the next round.
In the quarterfinals, he was better than Yao Ariel Ephraim Abongni with a score of 2:0, but in the match for a place in the final, Benjamin was defeated by the Turkish national team member Omer Fukran Kopre.
Avdagic, like Husic, was free in the first round, and in the next round she defeated South Korean Siwoo Kim 2:0 (13:1, 22:14).
With a victory against Erika Karabeleva of Bulgaria in the quarterfinals, with a score of 2:0 (18:6, 13:10), Ada secured a place among the four best competitors in the under-53-kilogram category and another medal for BiH.
Unfortunately, with a loss in the semifinal match to Iran’s Mobina Nematzadeh (2:0), the BiH national team member was left without the chance to fight for gold.
A performance at the World U21 Championships also awaits the third member of our team, Muhamed Djonko, it was stated.
