At this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held in Great Britain, students from Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved historic success, winning three gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
For three years now, the Ministry of Education of the Canton of Sarajevo has systematically supported the departure of students to international competitions and provides scholarships and awards for gifted students.
They invited everyone who wants to welcome the BiH Olympic team to come to the Sarajevo airport on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:50 p.m.
This is the 32nd time that Bosnia and Herzegovina is participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the most prestigious mathematical competition in the world, and in the previous 31 participations, not a single student managed to win a gold medal.
This year, students from Bosnia and Herzegovina won as many as three gold medals. The golden boys are Benjamin Mujkić, a 3rd grade student at Second High School in Sarajevo, Andrej Krčmar, a 2nd grade student at Banja Luka High School, Vuk Janković, a 1st grade student at “Jovan Dučić” High School in Trebinje.
In this way, they wrote the history of BiH mathematics in golden letters, and although they won many awards before, this is the crown of their work and effort.
Other students from Bosnia and Herzegovina also achieved notable results. Harun Alibegović, a graduate of Richmond Park International Secondary School Sarajevo, won the silver medal, while Adnan Osmić and Naida Gavranović, students of Second High School Sarajevo, won bronze medals. Adisa Bolić was the leader at this year’s historic Olympics for Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Bojan Pažin was the deputy. This is also the first time that all students from Bosnia and Herzegovina were decorated with medals at the IMO. In the team ranking, Bosnia and Herzegovina took 13th place in the competition of 108 countries, which is by far the best team ranking in history (the previous best ranking was 29th place).
The Association of Mathematicians of Sarajevo Canton congratulated the students and leaders, and pointed out that all these students have been attending the Mathematics School for Gifted Students organized by them for years, and that they were aware that they had a fantastic team, considering that all team members had already won medals at international competitions, but still they could not even dream of such a result.
