The Fire near Ljubinje is under Control

The fire that broke out in an inaccessible area in the region of the village of Ubosko-Bitunja near Ljubinje is still active, but it is under control and does not threaten people’s lives or property, said the mayor of this municipality, Stevo Drapić.

Drapić praised the work of the Helicopter Service of Republika Srpska and the firefighters, noting that the helicopter had more than 60 sorties.

He stated that today a new fire that broke out in the area of the village of Bančići was localized.

Drapić expects that the helicopter will operate around 18:00.

Up to this moment, we have released around 50 tons of water and managed to rehabilitate two fires in the area of the municipality of Ljubinje, Boban Kusturić, Director of the Helicopter Service of the Republika Srpska, told RTRS.

Kusturić emphasized that the firefighters on the ground could not do anything on the greater part of the fire because the terrain was quite inaccessible.

“In addition, the country is extremely dry, so the fire spreads very quickly. We shouldn’t take too many risks either. We thought of moving some people to some locations, but we are afraid that the wind will not change direction, that the fire will move towards them and that we will not endanger their lives. So, in coordination with the firefighting units and the Civil Protection, we are working on extinguishing this fire and we will try to do most of the work from the helicopter,” said Kusturić.
