state prisonConstruction of the prison in East Sarajevo is going according to the plans, and it is expected that by the end of the year BiH will have a highly secured institution for accommodation of the most severe criminal offenders.

“Currently in progress are works on the installations and interior of all ten facilities of the prison complex, whose construction has been completely finished in the past period,” said the spokeswoman of the Ministry of Justice of BiH Marina Bakić.

Total surface of the prison will amount to 24.000 BAM and every cell in which one prisoner will be accommodated will cover 12 square meters.

According to Bakić, construction and functioning of the future prison are completely in accordance with the European prison rules and standards.

With the implementation of the planned project, BiH, will get prison capacities of maximum security, with the possibility of accommodating 348 criminal offenders in total – 298 prisoners and 50 detainees.

“This will significantly relieve the capacities of entity prisons and solve the issues of their overcrowdings. In addition, it will contribute to the better re-socialization of perpetrators of minor criminal offenses” Bakić said.

Prison is expected to start working early next year, and employment of 250 persons is planned – police officers, technical staff, administration and others.

“So far, mostly donor and credit funds were used for construction and financials are completely secured” Bakić said.

Works on the construction of the prison are being executed by the Czech-Spanish consortium OHL ŽS.

Works began in late July 2014, and deadline for construction is 24 months.
