How to effectively Decrease the Number of potential Killers on the Road by the Reform of the Law?

accidnetThe representative of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Saša Magazinović believes that the daily news about traffic accidents with tragic outcomes where the cause is in many cases wanton driving or driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and the like, must be a reason for the Council of Ministers for a serious reform of the law.

Magazinović said that there exist numerous experiences in the countries of the region, and EU as well, of how the number of potential killers on the road is reduced.

For the beginning, he states, strict penalties must be introduced, but also the social consensus must be reached that it is about time we all together face those who wantonly endanger the lives of other participants in the traffic, and many times even the accidental passersby.

‘’The maximum penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol range from 3.600 Euros in Austria to 11.000 Euros in Belgium, which is many times more than in our country. According to the experts, it turned out that heavy penalties really do yield results. In addition to that other sanctions are applied, including prison sentences, also much more stringent than in B&H’’, stated Magazinović.

He added that the BH legislation must finally give a clear basis for rigorous punishment of haughty driving, for what the neighboring countries opted as well.

‘’Thus in Croatia, for example, a special article of the law defines ‘wanton driving’’, predicting a sentence of up to three years in prison’’, said Magazinović.

According to him, the time for analysis and thinking has expired, and ‘’it must be reacted fast, since we daily witness unnecessarily lost lives’’.
