An Israeli official said that Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy, was killed in an attack in the Iranian city of Bandar Abbas.
According to the same source, Tangsiri was responsible for plans to close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping lanes for oil.
There has been no official confirmation from Iran so far.
Tangsiri had served as commander of the IRGC navy since 2018 and was considered one of the country’s hardline military leaders. He was known for his threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, as well as for his frequent confrontations with US warships in the Persian Gulf.
The IRGC navy plays a key role in controlling the Gulf waters, and specializes in rapid and asymmetric operations against commercial and military vessels of Tehran’s opponents.
The city of Bandar Abbas represents one of Iran’s most important naval and economic bases in the south of the country, and the main stronghold of the IRGC’s naval activities in monitoring the Strait of Hormuz.
