IGK: Canada Reaffirms Support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Sovereignty, Integrity and Multi-Ethnic Character

The Institute for Genocide Research (IGK) has written to Canada, as a member of the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council and the current leader of the seven most developed countries in the world, asking it to use all democratic means to protect the threatened territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The response from the Office of Prime Minister Mark Carney states, among other things, that Canada welcomes the decision of the High Representative, which allows for the financing of much-needed measures for the integrity of elections and strengthens the democratic electoral process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the IGK announced.

“Canada paid tribute to the victims of the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica on July 11 of this year. Parliamentary Secretary Rob Oliphant represented Canada at the ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of remembrance, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to truth, justice and reconciliation.

Canada is proud to have been one of the sponsors of the UN General Assembly Resolution adopted in May 2024, which established the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, because it is important to remember and learn from such terrible periods in the history of our civilization,” it is stated.

The letter from the Prime Minister’s Office emphasizes that Canada remains committed to defending the Dayton Peace Agreement of 1995 and supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity and multiethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that peace in the region depends on peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Remembering the crimes and tragedies of the past and holding those responsible for them accountable is crucial for building a future based on truth, justice, reconciliation and lasting peace,” the letter from the Prime Minister of Canada states.

The IGK and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in Canada thanked the Government of Canada for its continued support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence and statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They also point out that Canada is one of the leaders in the strategic institutionalization of the culture of remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide.
