Iran has vowed revenge after nearly 100 people were killed in two explosions near the tomb of slain Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.
At the time of the explosions, a ceremony was being held in the city of Kerman to mark the assassination of Iranian Supreme Commander Qasem Suleimani in 2020.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said the attack was “heinous and inhumane”, while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei vowed revenge.
“Cruel criminals must know that from now on they will be severely dealt with and there is no doubt that there will be a harsh response,” he said, according to state media.
The mayor of Kerman, Said Tabrizi, told Iran’s state-run ISNA news agency that the explosions happened about 10 minutes apart.
Local media reports indicate that more than 140 people were injured.
Kerman Deputy Governor Rahman Jalali described the blasts as “terrorist attacks”, without specifying who might be behind them.
The United States has said it was in no way involved in the explosions in Iran and had no reason to believe Israel was either.
