‘It’s time for a new Approach’: Murphy says Western Strategy towards Serbia has failed

The former American ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Michael Murphy, assessed that the long-term strategy of the USA and the European Union towards the Western Balkans, based on the illusion that solving the status of Serbia will automatically solve the problems in the entire region, was a complete failure.

He said that it is time to stop misunderstandings when it comes to Belgrade, since Serbia is constantly taking, as he stated, actions harmful to regional stability.

Despite investment from the West, the country remains tied to its old politics and worldview, including many of its dangerous Milosevic-era beliefs and its pro-Russian stance, Murphy is clear.

He concludes by asserting that the Western strategy of settling Serbia, and thus the entire Western Balkans, has failed. It’s time for a new and different approach, Murphy concluded.
