doctorIvana Sinanovic, employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Canton Tuzla, is the only doctor of forensics in BiH. She is working on the most serious criminal cases such as murder and rape, and from her expertise is the biological evidence and findings are afraid criminals, murderers, robbers and sex offenders.

Even though she is doing this job for almost 14 years, even today she often explains why she decided for this job, instead of working with flowers and plants.

“When I tell someone I’m a forensic scientist, young people who watch the series say: ‘Good for you that is an interesting job. Is that CSI (popular American series of investigations of crimes)? On the other hand, people who are unwilling to work with blood or to see the blood and the dead man, often say, ‘Oh, I would not do the job for any salary that you would give me,’ “said Sinanovic, explaining that forensic science has a main task to provide a means for linking offender with the victim, the crime scene and mode of execution.

She admits that it was not easy when she came for the first time to the crime scene, where was murdered man. The bigger fear was only when she first went to the autopsy, but she overcame this fear by listening to advice of her husband, who also worked long hours in the police.

He told her that it would be easier if she does not watch and does not remember faces and names of the victims, but to accept such cases as an integral part of her job. Advice of Prof. Dr. Zdenka Cihlarz, from whom she learned during the first autopsy that she should always give reverence to dead people, because medicine would not be at this level if there was not dead people, on which they worked investigations and analysis.

Forensic scientist, she says, should always bear in mind that they are making decisions about someone’s life, so she is working with an extra dose of responsibility and fear, because she is aware that the crimes that she is dealing with, are punishable with 10-15 years of imprisonment.

Besides working in the Ministry of Interior, Sinanovic also shares her knowledge and experience. She writes and publishes books and research papers that have been accepted in the European Union, and she is doing her best for students of the “Kallos” and the European University in Brcko, where she teaches.

Also, she noted that it is necessary to educate yourself in different fields. Besides reading professional literature, she has other interests, which are again related to learning, reading and writing.
