The current American president and former candidate of the Democrats for the upcoming presidential elections, Joe Biden, has given up his candidacy.
It was announced on his official website.
In a statement released today, Biden emphasized how serving the American people as president was the greatest honor of his life.
“Although it was my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the rest of my term,” he said.
He announced an additional address to the nation later in the week.
“For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who worked so hard to re-elect me. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an amazing partner in this whole thing. And let me express my sincere appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me. Today I believe what I always have: That there is nothing America can’t do – when we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America,” his message reads.
Instead of Biden, it will now be necessary to choose a new Democratic candidate who will face Republican candidate Donald Trump, in a race that has already been marked by tensions, but also by the assassination of Trump.
