Khan: Diversity of BiH is a Strength, not a Weakness

Afzal KhanBosnia and Herzegovina must unlock the path to EU membership, to keep up with the countries in the region, because BiH is a European country that belongs to the community of European nations, while its diversity should be viewed as strength, not weakness,” said in an interview with FENA MEP and shadow rapporteur for BiH in the Group of Socialists and Democrats (SD) Afzal Khan.

He visited Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time to learn about the situation in our country, and in the interview he emphasized that the political leaders of the country must rise above ethnic differences, and clearly state their view that the future of this country is in the European Union.

Khan points out that it is now important to take advantage of new leadership in the European Union after the elections in the EU as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is important this time to focus on badly needed reforms.

“Also,it is of great importance to ensure that the judicial system is free from political interference and that the appointment of people to positions of responsibility are made based on merit. We will not see any progress, if those responsible do not tackle nepotism and corruption,” stressed Khan.

During numerous meetings with various BiH officials and citizens he realized that there is optimism among citizens who see their future in the EU, and one of the things that has to be improved, says Khan, is that the BiH government must find mechanisms to make state administration more efficient.

When asked about the reasons for his visit, Khan said that his visit is backed by personal interest because he was recently appointed spokesman of the agreement on BiH’s accession to the European Union and is convinced that he needed to visit the country and talk with its citizens in order to truly get to know the country.

In an interview with FENA he said that he was impressed by the beauty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also with its potential to move forward because the citizens of BiH, despite many challenges, are optimistic about the future.
