A journalist of Al Jazeera Sanel Kajan launched an initiative for the establishment of a journalism award that would be named after the first journalist in BiH who was a victim of the aggression – Kjašif Smajlović.
“Many countries paid tribute to their journalists in this way and the Kjašif Smajlović award would be of great significance for multiple reasons. He was killed at his workplace, while he was working as a journalist for Oslobođenje from Zvornik. His answer to the question why he did not leave town, posed by the colleague who was the last to hear from him when he was reporting from Zvornik, was ‘Because I am a journalist!,” Kajan said.
Kajan’s proposal is to present this award annually for extraordinary successes in journalism and reporting.
The initiative was supported by many journalists and redactions and it will be officially forwarded to the Parliament of the FBiH and the Parliament of FBiH in the next few days, so that precisely these highest legislative bodies would establish this award, after the model of similar journalism awards in the neighboring countries and the European Parliament.
