Kotor Varoš: New School Year Uncertain for Bosniak Children

kotor varosEven though beginning of a new school year approaches, the problem of education of Bosniak children from Vrbanjci near Kotor-Varoš has not been solved.

These pupils have not attended school last school year, because their basic request to study national group of subjects, which they are entitled to, was not granted.

One of the parents Nijaz Duzan told FENA today that unfortunately they have not been contacted by any of the competent representatives of authority in Republika Srpska to try and reach a compromise.

”We do not know if they are doing anything to solve this issue, because no one has officially contacted us”, said Duzan.

He repeated that parents are ready to engage in a dialogue with the RS authorities on this problem and they hope this will not be another failed call.

However, if the situation does not change by the beginning of a new school year, they are determined to persist in their demands and not let their children attend school, even though they are aware how much children and parents lose by doing that.

”We parents agreed not to let our children go to school the next school year if the national group of subjects is not introduced. Until when that will last depends exclusively on representatives of the RS authority”, Duzan told FENA.

He confirmed they will file an appeal to the District Court in Banja Luka to decision of the Basic Court in Kotor-Varoš, which rejected their complaint against RS and elementary school “Sveti Sava“ Kotor-Varoš as inopportune.

They will file a complaint, even though the Court from Kotor-Varoš determined that conditions are fulfilled to introduce national group of subjects in school in Vrbanjci, and as it has not been introduced, that children were discriminated, their right to equal treatment was violated and that there is discrimination against Bosniak children in this school.

”We will continue filing complaints until we reach some independent court which will clearly state what this is about”, said Duzan.

He told FENA they were ready to engage in a dialogue with competent authorities in RS on this issue since the first day, but they no longer know who to call, which is why the parents think there is some “systemic blockade” that is blocking solution of this problem.
