Russian troops have liberated the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today. According to him, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the successful completion of the operation “to liberate the Kursk region,” RIA Novosti reported.
“The complete defeat of the enemy in the Kursk border region creates the conditions for further successful operations of our troops in other important areas of the front and brings the defeat of the neo-Nazi regime closer,” Putin said at a meeting with Gerasimov, TASS reported, Al Jazeera reports.
Ukrainian forces launched an incursion into the Kursk region on August 6, 2024, but their advance was soon halted. In early March this year, Russian forces launched a major offensive, during which about 1,100 square kilometers of territory were liberated in a few days.
Since the start of the conflict, more than 60 settlements have been returned to Russian control, including the city of Shuzha, more than half of which have been liberated in the past two months. According to Moscow, Ukrainian armed forces have lost at least 75,000 soldiers and more than 400 tanks during the fighting in the border area, RIA Novosti reported.
