French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his readiness to consider Slovenia’s proposal to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status, that is, as he said, “he will consider the European perspective of BiH”. On the other hand, he says that the situation of our country in the region is “quite unique”.
At a time when Ukraine and Moldova were the focus for obtaining EU candidate status, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob proposed the same for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Macron commented on the idea today.
“I am fully available to discuss the proposal of Mr. Prime Minister Golob and the proposal of some other colleagues. As far as I am concerned, the goal is to provide the maximum chance for creating peace and stability in the region,” Macron said.
However, he points out that the situation in the Western Balkans is “critical”, and Bosnia and Herzegovina is “unique”.
“The stability of the Western Balkans is absolutely critical and it is clear that during one of our most recent European Council meetings we saw perfectly the frustration and resentment that is growing in the region. I think that what we managed to fix between Bulgaria and North Macedonia was crucial to the solution of the situation for Albania and North Macedonia. But at the same time, it is clear that Bosnia and Herzegovina is now in a rather unique situation in the Western Balkans,” Macron said.
He commented on the existing negative influences on BiH and the candidate status as a way to solve that problem.
“It is clear that we have increasing external forces that are using this situation, tensions between communities to destabilize not only Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also its closest neighbors and the entire region. I think we cannot accept that. If the European perspective is the way to improve the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, then I am completely ready to consider it,” he pointed out, Klix.ba writes.
