Marking of the Memorial Day for all killed Sarajevo Citizens

On the occasion of marking February 5th, the Memorial Day for all died Sarajevo citizens in 1992-1995, and the 24th anniversary of the killed Sarajevo citizens at the Markale market place, a commemorative session of the Canton Sarajevo (CS) Assembly, Sarajevo City Council and Municipal Councils in the CS area was held yesterday at the National Theater, according to Anadolu Agency (AA).

The session was opened by Ana Babic, chairman of the CS Assembly, who invited the audience to pay tribute to thousands of Sarajevo citizens who were killed, with prayers and a minute of silence. She reminded that the CS Assembly in 2007 decided to pronounce February 5th  the Memorial Day for all killed citizens during 1992-1995.

“Today, Sarajevo remembers all of those who gave life for freedom and homeland. On this day in 1994, a terrible crime was committed at the Markale market place, when 68 of our citizens were killed and 144 were wounded. The biggest massacre of Sarajevo in the last war was selected as a symbol of marking the Memorial Day for all innocent victims who were in this city during 1.400 days of siege. February 5th is a day when we remember our 11.000 killed citizens in Sarajevo, and 1.601 of them were children, “ Babic said.

Prime Minister of CS, Elmedin Konakovic, said after a commemorative session that these dates bring a sense of self compassion and everything that happened in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) during the aggression. He believes that today in BiH, those who have given life for a freedom are less and less appreciated.

“Nowadays, on the left and the right side, the hordes who honor the war criminals are stronger, they name the dorms after war criminals, they are given life acts awards at the National Assembly of Republika Srpska (RS) etc. On the other hand, there are also Hague verdicts, but the reactions do not have anything with the civilization. In BiH, on the political scene, there is a difficult situation where the positions and personal interests are still in the foreground, and these dates are not awakening the awareness of those who lead the processes that should direct our youth to be different. I think that, as time passes, we seem to be worse and less appreciative of those who gave their lives, put their blood in the foundations of BiH, in order to have a sovereign, independent, unique, complete BiH with the borders, anthem, monet, and everything else that one country has, “ Konakovic said.

After the commemoration, the attendants went to the memorial place of the Sarajevo citizens who were killed in the first of two Markale massacres, layed flowers and payed tribute to all the victims.
