13141060_1171859079531713_99320707_nIn the presence of a large number of citizens, members of veterans’ associations, families of martyrs and killed fighters, fellow fighters, and representatives of executive and legislative authority of the Centar Municipality, the Mayor of Centar Municipality Dževad Bećirević, together with the mother of one martyr Ferida Sakić, revealed today the memorial plaque – a sign of remembrance of the fights that were led on May 2, 1992 near the Skenderija bridge.

On this occasion, those present laid red roses in front of the newly revealed memorial plaque and by saying a prayer, having a minute of silence and releasing white doves in the air as a symbol of peace paid tribute to the killed sons of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mayor Bećirević said that this memorial plaque was placed on the occasion of the Day of Centar Municipality and that it will remain on that place until the construction of a memorial, which has already been agreed with the representatives of veterans’ associations and the selection of conceptual design is in progress.

“The new memorial will be a central memorial for the Sarajevo Canton and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have many other smaller memorials and I believe that our killed fighters deserve to have one joint representative memorial,” said Bećirević.

Ferida Sakić said that her son was only 23 years, one month and one day old when he was killed.

“I am proud of being a mother of one such child. Dealing with this has been difficult for the past 24 years, but I persevered. I am happy that we revealed this memorial today, in memory of our youth who have their lives for our people and our city,” said Sakić, whose son Ademir Sakić Džemica was killed in the vicinity of the newly revealed memorial plaque during the May fights in 1992 against a much better equipped and superior enemy.
