maryannA press conference regarding Women’s day was held on the premises of the Sarajevo hotel Bristol yesterday. The title of the conference was “Strengthening of the role of women and young political leaders in the public and political spheres of B&H”, where the main topic was the role of women in the public and political spheres.

The Chief of the Office of the Council of Europe in Bosnia Herzegovina, Mary Ann Hennessey, said that the work and achievement of women should be exposed to public. On this occasion, one of the most successful women in B&H and the first deputy of the Committee for equality and nondiscrimination of the Council of Europe, Ismeta Dervoz, was invited.

“This day and this topic deserve large media space and good positive examples of smart, educated, energetic and capable women should stand out. In addition, young women who have already taken many responsibilities and who are ready to be like that in the future, should also be presented”, said Dervoz.

Hennessy added that women, especially young ones, face many obstacles. Moreover, she emphasized the problem of the failure to implement the Law on equality and the Law on the prohibition of discrimination, and that those bodies which have already adopted the law, do not take their enforcement seriously.

On the question if she felt discrimination against her and regarding her work, Dervoz answered that it was very hard to dissuade her from her aim and that she never gives up. Moreover, she sent a message to all young women, saying that they should not give up even when they do not have support.

“I cannot accept the role of victim and simply because I am a woman does not imply that I am in a subordinate position”, added Dervoz, and in the end she congratulated the holiday.
