The Mercedes Formula 1 team announced yesterday that its reserve driver, Mick Schumacher, will leave the team at the end of the year.
Schumacher, who has spent two years with Mercedes as a reserve driver, has worked on the simulator and provided feedback during testing and races.
In addition to his responsibilities with Mercedes, Schumacher has also competed for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship.
“I’m grateful to Toto (Wolff) and the entire Mercedes team for the insights I’ve gained over the past two years. They have undoubtedly made me a more experienced driver as I’ve become better acquainted with the engineering side of the sport. But watching these cars race without being in the cockpit is difficult. I want to return to fully focusing on racing. I want to be entirely dedicated to the sporting side of motorsport,” said the 25-year-old Schumacher, as quoted by Mercedes.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Schumacher for his hard work, diligence, and determination, saying he has been vital to the team over the past two years.
For the next season, only one seat remains available, at the RB team, leaving uncertainty about whether Schumacher will secure a spot in Formula 1.
