A growing number of Democrats in the United States (U.S.)Congress are calling on President Joseph Biden to withdraw his bid for re-election after a poor performance in a debate against Republican rival Donald Trump.
Many lawmakers have expressed discomfort with the continuation of Biden’s campaign, while others have strongly supported the incumbent’s plans.
A total of 11 members of the Democratic Party who hold mandates in Congress publicly called on Biden to drop out of the election campaign.
Among them is Vermont Senator Peter Welch, who called on Biden to step down “for the good of the country.”
House of Representatives member Hillary Scholten said that, for the sake of American democracy, she believes it is time for Biden to withdraw from the election race and allow a new leader to take over the candidacy.
“Joseph Biden is a patriot, but he’s no longer the best candidate to beat Trump,” said a member of the House of Representatives,Pat Ryan, who won the elections of the New York district in 2019 and took it from the Republicans.
Mikie Sherrill, also from the House of Representatives, said that she knows that Biden cares about the future of America and that is why she is asking him “to declare that he will not run for re-election” and that he will help the Democratic Party in choosing a new candidate.
