Doorstep statement by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte ahead of the informal meeting of European Union Leaders

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte sharply criticized Russia on Thursday for its latest missile and drone attacks that hit civilian areas and the diplomatic mission of the European Union (EU) in Kyiv, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens.

“We are all shocked by what happened, above all, because these are not attacks on military targets; these are civilian targets,” said Rutte, adding that yesterday he spoke with senior EU officials to consider the course of events.

“While we are trying to do everything to support the United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump to end this war, in the meantime, Russian President Putin is ready to continue doing this, to continue attacking innocent civilians in Ukraine,” he said at a press conference in the southern German city of Wurzburg.

Yesterday, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, also said that the EU diplomatic mission was damaged in a deliberate Russian attack and conveyed that Europeans will not be intimidated by this attack.
