Nehammer resigns as Austrian Chancellor

The chairman of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and chancellor Karl Nehammer announced tonight that the coalition negotiations between his party and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) have definitely failed. He also announced his resignation from the leadership of the ÖVP and the position of chancellor.

“We have made every effort so far, but an agreement on key issues was not possible. In such circumstances, there is no point in continuing for the sake of a positive future for Austria,” Nehammer said in a short speech.

The SPÖ says that they extended a hand of cooperation until the last moment, but that the ÖVP has not shown a willingness to compromise. The main points of disagreement were related to budget consolidation, with the SPÖ insisting on property and inheritance taxes, which the ÖVP categorically rejected.

In his video message, Nehammer emphasized that destructive forces within the SPÖ are taking precedence, and that the ÖVP will not support programs that are, in his words, “hostile to the economy, competitiveness and jobs.” He added that he should be ready for compromises in negotiations, but not at the cost of citizens’ interests.

“I have always made it clear that I will not support taxes that harm our country. I have kept my word,” Nehammer stressed, adding that he is stepping down to allow for an orderly transition of power.

A meeting of all provincial ÖVP leaders is planned for Sunday morning, where further steps will be decided. Options include negotiations with the FPÖ or holding new elections.

This withdrawal comes after Neos, the third partner in the initial negotiations, left the coalition talks, further complicating the situation for the ÖVP and SPÖ, Klix.ba writes.
