mass graveExhumation from the mass grave at the locality of Kazanbašča near Zvornik started yesterday, and a total of eight complete remains of Bosniak victims killed during ethnic cleansing in 1992 have already been found.

Exhumation of the mass grave continued through the day.

The mass grave was recently found by accident by workers of the Islamic Community in Zvornik, while digging graves, in the unmarked part of the Kazanbašča cemetery. Exhumation is led by representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, upon the request by the Institute for Missing Persons in BiH.

“Eight victims have been found so far. This is a primary mass grave. The remains are complete, found in black protective bags used by the former Yugoslav People’s Army. It is being assumed that victims are from the territory of Zvornik, killed in 1992. Exhumation is to be continued tomorrow,” stated yesterday the spokeswoman of the Institute, Lejla Čengić.

In 2003, a mass grave was found at this locality out of which 131 victims were exhumed. Majority of the victims is buried in the Memorial Centre Gornja Kalesija.

So far, 1.091 victims have been found and identified at the territory of Zvornik, and it is still being searched for 600 victims who went missing in that area.
