A new meeting on the Southern Interconnection at the Embassy of the United States of America will be held today, it was confirmed to BHRT.

The meeting is expected to be attended by leaders of the ruling coalition in the Federation of BiH, and is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Following previous meetings, the US Embassy stated that all parties agreed that it is urgent that the construction of the Southern Interconnection gas pipeline begins in 2026.

They emphasized that, in order to achieve this, it is necessary to coordinate and conclude an agreement between BiH and Croatia as soon as possible, in order to enable the import of American liquefied natural gas to BiH.

Federal Minister of Energy, Mining and Industry Vedran Lakić, at yesterday’s press conference, among other things, addressed the implementation of the Southern Gas Interconnection project.

“I think we have made a step forward this year when it comes to legislation and at the beginning of the year we adopted the Law on the Southern Gas Interconnection BiH – Croatia, thus creating a prerequisite for the implementation of the project. A few weeks ago, there was a change in the strategic approach to the implementation of this law, which will certainly undergo certain changes in the coming period, given that the FBiH is committed to doing this with a strategic partner and implementing this project in this way, but it is very important to emphasize that the law has been passed,” said Lakić.

Lakić pointed out that three teams have been formed for the implementation of the Southern Interconnection project.

“The first team consists of political leaders and this body will decide on the fate of the project, the first meeting was at the US Embassy, and a new one is scheduled for tomorrow. The second team brings together deputy political leaders and experts who prepare technical details, while the third team operates within the Ministry itself. All activities within the Southern Interconnection will be carried out in such a way that the infrastructure is ready for the use of hydrogen,” Lakić said yesterday.

As a reminder, the President of the Federation of BiH, Lidija Bradara (HDZ), has sent a request to the Constitutional Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to review the constitutionality of the Law on the Southern Interconnection of the FBiH.

The explanation of the request states that this law was adopted by the House of Representatives of the FBiH Parliament on December 12, 2024 and the House of Peoples of the FBiH Parliament on January 16, 2025, and that it was published in the “Official Gazette of the FBiH”.
