A police sniper potentially saved numerous lives when he shot at the rifle of an attacker targeting Donald Trump on July 13th of this year, according to a report on the incident.
According to a report by Congressman Clay Higgins of Louisiana, the sniper’s bullet damaged the rifle of Thomas Matthew Crooks. Moments later, a Secret Service sniper fatally shot the assailant.
The report comes at a time when the Secret Service is temporarily reassigning some of President Joe Biden’s bodyguards to protect Trump, according to United States (U.S.) media.
Higgins’ report states that a SWAT operative from Butler was the first to shoot at the attacker from a distance of about one hundred meters.
The congressman said that the sniper “ran toward the threat, moving into a clear position to shoot directly in the line of fire.”
He then fired a single shot at the attacker, hitting part of his rifle, according to the report. This temporarily knocked the attacker off his position, but he reappeared within seconds before being fatally shot by the Secret Service sniper.
Crooks killed one member of the audience and critically injured two others in the attack.
