New Tourist Attraction: The Bicycle Route Project from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik has been launched

The HerzegovinaBike Association and the Outdoor Agency Visit Konjic have initiated a project to develop a 350-kilometer-long bicycle route connecting Sarajevo, Mostar, and Dubrovnik – three key destinations in the region.

This route will serve as the main cycling path, which will later be supplemented by smaller routes, allowing the connection of numerous locations and destinations across Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), thereby expanding the country’s outdoor offerings.

In the long term, there is hope for networking cycling routes throughout BiH, with the ambition for the country to become part of the EuroVelo route network, which would secure BiH a prominent spot on Europe’s cycling map.

The project is being implemented as part of the broader initiative “European Union (EU) for Local Communities,” funded by the EU and carried out by the Center for Civil Society Promotion (CPCD) in partnership with HELP.

The route will pass through Bjelasnica, Lukomir, Visocica, Glavaticevo, Boracko Lake, and Rujiste, linking Sarajevo with Mostar. From Mostar, it will follow the well-known Ciro Trail to Dubrovnik, covering a distance of 140 kilometers. This route offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty and cultural landmarks of BiH.

“Through the analysis of tourist trends, we realized that this section is one of the most sought-after by cycling and outdoor sports enthusiasts. It’s important to note that it traverses spectacular mountain landscapes and rural areas, providing tourists with an authentic experience of nature and local culture,” said Toni Zoric, president of HerzegovinaBike.

“By creating and networking this new route, recognized even by National Geographic, we are bringing our tourism potential closer to international tourists worldwide. It will contribute to the development of local communities and initiatives along the route, as the new approach will attract new tourists who will use these services,” added Jelle Scherpereel from Visit Konjic.

Project development phases

The development of the cycling route will take place in two phases. The first phase includes route inspections, mapping, video and photo documentation for promotion, gathering information, familiarizing local communities with the project, and installing cycling signs and boards along the route. The second phase involves creating a visualized website, organizing marketing activities and promotional events, and providing regular updates on project progress.

A new dimension of tourism in BiH

Besides connecting Sarajevo, Mostar, and Dubrovnik, this project holds broader significance for tourism development in BiH. The main route will enable the connection of smaller local trails, opening up additional opportunities for adventure and rural tourism.

“In the future, we envision a highway passing through BiH, which would make the M17 main road ideal for cycling. We see this route as key to connecting with the EuroVelo network, positioning BiH as an important outdoor destination at the European level,” Zoric added.

“This cycling route is not just an opportunity to explore the natural beauty of BiH, but also a bridge connecting local communities and contributing to their sustainable development. We are glad that the importance of this intervention, which will enrich the experiences of all cycling enthusiasts, has been recognized by the EU within the EU for Local Communities project,” emphasized Aida Nadarevic, project manager at CPCD.

Safety and sustainability

Although cyclists currently use the M17 highway, the development of a highway in BiH will make this road safer and more attractive for cyclists. The project also promotes sustainable development, advocating cycling as an eco-friendly form of tourism and transportation.

This ambitious project not only connects the region but also strengthens tourism infrastructure, attracts foreign tourists, and extends their stay in BiH. The Sarajevo-Dubrovnik cycling route is poised to become one of the key attractions for cycling and nature enthusiasts, Klix.ba writes.
