One in two people in Britain expects to spend less than usual on the Christmas holidays due to the rising cost of living, according to the latest research by the Jugov agency.

As many as 52 percent of respondents said they expect to spend less than usual for Christmas, while 36 percent say that spending will remain at the same level.

Only three percent say they will spend more on Christmas than in previous years.

When asked where they would cut spending the most, 86 percent said they would cut back on gifts, and 59 percent said they would cut down on family or gatherings with friends for lunch or dinner.

Also, 56 percent will reduce visits to Christmas markets.

At the same time, 54 percent say they will cut back on food, and 38 percent plan to donate less to charities or not at all.

The research was conducted on a sample of 2,138 adults in the period from November 24 to 26, Srna news agency writes.
