This is one of the capital projects of Elektroprivreda Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) which is expected to increase the electricity production of the public concern from renewable, clean sources.
An investment worth 38.8 million euros
The HPP would be located 25 kilometers downstream from the town of Zenica. The installed capacity is 9.1 MW and the annual production is 46.2 Gwh.
The estimated value of the investment is 38.8 million euros, and the construction is planned from own funds and loans.
A Feasibility Study with geological exploration works, an Economic Feasibility Study and a request for a concession, as well as a Preliminary Design have already been prepared.
Elektroprivreda BiH has included this project in its plan to increase the share of electricity production from renewable resources in total production.
HPP Kovanici is one of 15 planned hydropower projects, which will ultimately harness the hydro potential of the Bosna River, from its source near Sarajevo to the entity line with Republika Srpska (RS).
Run-of-the-river hydropower plant
According to the Terms of Reference, HPP Kovanici contributes to meeting the growing demand for electricity in the country.
HPP Kovanici was designed as a classic type of run-of-the-riverplant. It is a concrete gravity overflow dam, the operator is part of the non-overflow part of the dam, and on the right and left side of the partition profile there are the wing parts of the dam – gravity blocks.
The designed dam of HPP Kovanici forms an accumulation at a length of approximately 2.60 km for Q1/100, while for the installed flow it is approximately 3.62 km long.
At the stretch of the reservoir there is the planned highway 5C, which crosses from the right to the left bank downstream from the railway bridges, Avaz writes.
