iftarThe heads of the Orthodox Church in Bijelo Polje near Mostar organized a joint iftar for Muslims from that area on Thursday.

This laudable gesture was organized on the occasion of the marking of 150 years of existence of the Church of Ascension of the Lord. A liturgy led by the bishop Grigorije wwas also held in that church yesterday.

“As soon as the reins of the great empire loosened, our ancestors had a first task to build a temple, because they knew the most important thing was to find the link and bond with God, to whom they dedicated this temple,” said the bishop Grigorije during the liturgy.

In the evening hours, an iftar was organized at the church premises, attended by numerous invitees from cultural and religious life of Bijelo Polje and Mostar.

It was the fourth day of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims, when believers renounce food and water during the day. The culmination of Ramadan is the Eid al-Fitr, which is to be marked on July 5, 6 and 7 this year.

The church in Bijelo Polje was built in 1865, it was burned in 1992, and reconstructed in 2004 thanks to the donations of believers and the Eparchy of Zahumlje, Herzegovina and the Littoral.
