Painful Confession of a Mother of a Sick Boy: That Child in the Video could potentially be my Boy

After the video of the mistreatment of one of the ward patients reached the public again, yesterday The Union of Persons and Organizations of Persons with Disabilities in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) organized a peaceful gathering in front of the Institute in Pazaric. Even the parents of children with developmental disabilities who are not placed in this Institute are very upset, they point out.

Among those gathered yesterday was Amina, the mother of seven-year-old Hamza, who is 100% disabled. Hamza has cerebral palsy, and epilepsy, and is non-verbal.

However, according to the mother’s claims, Hamza has an acquired disability, caused, she says, by a doctor’s mistake.

“My child went into a birth coma due to hypoxia at birth, and as a result, he has all these diagnoses. It’s not that children are just born that way. Autisms and diagnoses arise, they can happen to anyone,” she stated at the beginning of the interview.

Hamza is not in an institution like the Institution in Pazaric, but his mother is very disturbed by the latest footage of the abuse of a ward patient.

“I haven’t slept for two nights because I’m going through it, not only me but also these other parents. We don’t want our children to die before us. While I’m talking to you, my child is facing a series of attacks,” she said, adding that, in case something happened to her and her husband, her child would face the fate of a ward patient.

She says that she is scared because of everything that can still happen.

“That child in the video could potentially be mine. I would come here alone every day if necessary. We are constantly getting information that we cannot prove with hearsay. He will go to Mjedenica in the first grade, there is no video surveillance there, and my child is non-verbal. Every day after kindergarten, I examined him. What I feel cannot be described in words, shame on them. If you saw someone abusing a child on the street, you would run to help. But these are children with disabilities, they just love them declaratively,” she claims.
