PM of Greece called on the new president of North Macedonia to return to her legal obligations

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis today called on the new president of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, to return to her legal obligations and the behavior that results from her role as president.

This reaction of the Greek prime minister comes after Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, the first female president of North Macedonia, refused to pronounce the new name of the country, which is used since the agreement with Greece in 2018, in her oath.

“I declare that I will perform the duties of the president of Macedonia conscientiously and responsibly, that I will respect the Constitution and laws, and that I will protect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Macedonia,” said Siljanovska-Davkova in front of representatives in the Assembly of North Macedonia and guests at the ceremony.

Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, candidate of the nationalist right, was elected to a five-year term in the second round of presidential elections on May 8. She defeated the social democrat, outgoing president Steve Pendarovoski, with 65 percent of the vote.

“Greece rejects manipulations like those with which Mrs. Siljanovska-Davkova opened her mandate,” wrote the Greek example on the social network X and called on her to respect legal obligations and abide by the obligations arising from her role as president.

He reminded that the new president of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, did not say the word “north”, which is an integral part of the country’s constitutional name, during her oath, and thus violated the official text of her oath, because calling the country by another name is illegal.

In 2018, Skopje concluded a historic agreement with Greece, as part of which it agreed to add the feature “North” to the country’s name, which was supposed to end a long-standing dispute with the neighboring country, which blocked its membership in NATO and accession negotiations with the European Union.
