In the continuation of the Hague process against Ratko Mladic, witness of defense Ljubodrag Gajic stated that Muslim civilians have “willingly” been evacuated from Srebrenica after the town fell to forces of Bosnian Serbs in July 1995.
“The people wanted to leave the territory on their own. As far as I know, they went willingly,” testified Gajic, who was a member of the Special Police Brigade of Republika Srpska (RS) in Potocari back then, where Muslim population sought for shelter in the UNPROFOR base.
During testimony, Gajic, however, also confirmed that members of the Special Police Brigade of RS were mass killing Muslim prisoners in the nearby village of Kravica after the fall of Srebrenica.
Mladic, former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS), is accused for committing genocide in Srebrenica after the 11th of July 1995, when Serbian forces expelled thousands of women, children and elder people, and separated and killed by shooting around 7,000 men at several locations in Zvornik.
As proof that Muslims willingly left Srebrenica, defense attorney Miodrag Stojanovic showed footage of Mladic on the 12th of July 1995 who was telling Muslim civilians that they will be transferred to the territory “controlled by Alija’s (Izetbegovic) forces” and that “they should not be afraid” because “no one will do no harm to them.”
Gajic confirmed that he was standing behind Mladic and he heard these words, which the Muslim civilians “received with approval.”
