Presenting the Results of Project “Development of BiH Branded Products of Animal Origin”

sir 1The presentation of results and final workshop of the project “Development of BIH Branded Products of Animal Origin and Certification Schemes for Specific Quality Mark”, which is financed by the USAID/Sida FARMA project and implemented by “Organic Control” will be held today in the BiH Foreign Trade Chamber in Sarajevo.

The goal of this project is to preserve domestic production of indigenous and domestic cheese, such as Livanjski, Vlasić and Herzegovinian cheese, with the appropriate standardization and certification, and for the producers to be familiar with the procedures to protect originality, geographic origin and traditional reputation of food in BIH.

In the framework of the project education was carried out by 15 experts on sensory analysis of cheese, 19 selected farmers were surveyed, 2 workshops for 75 producers of traditional cheeses was carried out, and a study was prepared entitled “Opportunities for conversion of animal products in BIH to organic products”.

The goal of the study was to assess the opportunities for converting a traditional cheese production into organic, as well as the opportunity for protecting marks of quality.

The study defined the specific recommendations for overcoming barriers to translating conventional to organic production, and producer organizations have been proposed that have the potential for modernization and commercialization of traditional organic products.

The study will be distributed to key actors in the sector, and the project USAID/Sida FARMA plans to continue support of development in these areas.
