United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump “is doing a lot” to resolve complex crises around the world, said Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday, after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, although several countries had nominated Trump for the award.
During a press conference in the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, following a three-day visit to that Central Asian country, Putin commented on the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize, emphasizing that “it is not up to him to decide” who will receive it.
“There have been cases when the committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to people who did nothing for peace,” said Putin, adding that he believes such decisions have “caused enormous damage” to the reputation of the award.
According to him, the Nobel Committee has thereby lost its “authority,” and he avoided answering the question of whether Trump deserves this recognition.
“But he is indeed doing a lot to resolve complex crises that have lasted for years, even decades,” said the Russian president, specifically highlighting the situation in Gaza, and added that it would be a “historic event” if Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza were truly implemented.
Speaking about Ukraine, Putin reiterated his belief that Trump “is sincerely trying” to end the three-and-a-half-year war in that country.
Earlier in the day, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Maria Corina Machado.
