The lanterns attract a lot of attention from the local population as well as tourists. There are different models of Ramadan lanterns that can be made of metal, wood, plastic or fabric.
They are made in various colors, designs and sizes. The main sales center is the Sayyidah Zaynab area in the capital city of Cairo.
Almost every house in Egypt has at least one Ramadan lantern. They are also considered the best Ramadan gift for family, relatives, friends, and other close people.
Al-Azhar Mosque, Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, Sayyidah Zaynab area and Imam-al Shafi Mosque are among the places where the spirit of Ramadan is most felt.
The history of Ramadan lanterns, which decorate the streets, shop windows and balconies of houses not only in Cairo but also throughout Egypt, dates back to 969, during the Fatimid period, which ruled the country for many years, AA writes.
