Bruce BertonSupervisor for District Brčko, Bruce G. Berton, responded to the letter by the Mayor of Brčko Ante Domić in which the supervisor’s consent was requested for the organization of referendum on the Day of RS at the territory of the District Brčko BiH for citizens who hold the citizenship of Republika Srpska.

“The High Representative clearly stated that the decision on the referendum on the Day of RS is unconstitutional and that it opposes the decision by the Constitutional Court of BiH. Therefore, I decided not to give my consent for the organization of the referendum of RS at the territory of the District Brčko,” stated the supervisor Berton.

Duties of the supervisor reached in 2007 prescribe that referendums at the territory of the District Brčko can be held exclusively with previous consent by the supervisor for District Brčko in written form and their implementation must be compliant with conditions approved by the supervisor for District Brčko.

The aim of this regulation is to ensure that referendums held in Brčko are in accordance with domestic and international law, especially with the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was stated.
