Republika Srpska in a legal and political Vacuum

Milorad Dodik is still not coming to terms with the decision of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which officially lost him the mandate of the President of Republika Srpska. At the moment, the entity is without a president, but also a government after Radovan Višković resigned. The opposition is demanding an extraordinary session and the election of a new acting president.

“I continue to do my job” – this is what Milorad Dodik says the day after the decision of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was his last hope that he would not be stripped of the mandate of the President of the RS. In his insulting manner, he blames Serb haters for everything – from judges, prosecutors and, as he says, the “occupational authorities”.

“If they wanted this development of the situation, they succeeded. They will try to problematize and persecute me again. Maybe they had a chance last time. I am proud of our structures, people, police, no matter what they think about it”, said Dodik.

As he says, he will continue his political life and will use it to continue the fight. And today’s reality is that the RS is without a president, but also with a resigned government, which is also pointed out by the opposition. Therefore, they are calling for an extraordinary session of the entity parliament to be convened as soon as possible and for a new acting president to be elected, until the elections.

“The Republika Srpska has not had a president since yesterday, the last time this happened was in 2007, when President Milan Jelić suddenly passed away… In 2007, at the time of the president’s death, the RS had a stable government, with an almost single-party majority, so after brief consultations and the unanimous position of the RS Government, the RS National Assembly appointed Igor Radojičić as the acting president of the RS, until elections are held and the newly elected president takes office,” recalled Igor Crnadak, head of the PDP MPs’ Club in the RS National Assembly.

A new session could even be held this week, announced Nenad Stevandić, president of the RS National Assembly (US). One of the items on the agenda at that session will be the dissolution of the current government, following the resignation of Radovan Višković.

“We hope that this could happen this week. RS must give its answer to Christian Schmidt’s unfounded decisions,” said Stevandić.

Dodik’s room for maneuver has been significantly narrowed after the verdict, especially after the expected support from the new US administration failed to materialize, according to political analysts. They also add that RS is currently in a legal and political vacuum.

“Milorad Dodik cannot transfer his powers to anyone and at the same time cannot appoint a new prime minister-designate. The question arises as to why this move was made if he cannot appoint a new prime minister-designate,” points out political analyst Tanja Topić.

According to her, numerous decisions made by the entity government are now coming back like a boomerang, such as, for example, announcing new referendums, which no one can implement now because, on the orders of Milorad Dodik, members of the Republic Commission have resigned. She adds that the price is now being paid for a policy in which numerous institutions are rendered meaningless and weakened due to the will of an individual, Federalna writes.
