After his release from custody, Mirsad Omerović was welcomed by the Federal Minister of Displaced Persons and Refugees, Nerin Dizdar, who posted an emotional video of his return to his family and home on his Facebook profile.

“After we received information about this case, we visited the family of Mirsad Omerović, a returnee, who also underwent torture in the camp, in order to get more information about what happened and to express our support to them. In recent months, we have witnessed frequent attacks and pressure on returnees, who returned to their homes after genocide and crimes. Their sacrifice is great, we will not watch the attacks on them from the sidelines, we will do everything to help, provide them with equal rights and make life easier. We promised help to Mirsad’s family, and expressed our expectation that Mirsad will be released home soon,” said Minister Dizdar.

On this occasion, Minister Dizdar invited the representatives of domestic institutions of the international community to fulfill their obligation to protect returnees.

“It is a poor government that uses force on the most oppressed and powerless”, concluded Dizdar.

Omerović was detained yesterday by members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republika Srpska because of the displeasure he expressed regarding the concert that was held in front of the church in the center of Srebrenica on the 28th anniversary of the genocide.

As reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the RS, Omerović was arrested due to the existence of grounds for suspicion that he had committed the criminal offense of “endangering security”.

In the evening of July 11, just a few hours after the burial of 30 identified victims of genocide, a concert was held in Srebrenica as part of the manifestation “Petrovdanski days of Srebrenica 2023.” during which nationalist songs were played that deeply disturbed the people of Srebrenica.
