Sarajevo Elects New Mayor in City Council Vote, Ushering in Fresh Leadership

Samir Avdić is the new mayor of Sarajevo. The City Council elected him with 16 votes, while the leadership of the City Council was elected earlier. Alen Girt is the chairman of the Sarajevo City Council, while the deputies are Svjetlana Šošić and Emir Bićo (NIP).

Samir Avdić was born on March 21, 1967 in Sarajevo. He received his primary, secondary and academic education in Sarajevo.

He graduated and earned a master’s degree in “Management in Sport” at the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education of the University of Sarajevo.

He has a successful sports career behind him, and went through all stages of development in Basketball Club Bosna, where he gained playing affirmation, and after that he played for European clubs: Unicaja Malaga – Spain, PTT Ankara, Tofas Bursa and Tuborg Izmir – Turkey.

He gained work experience in managerial positions in sports, and his wider social involvement is visible through humanitarian work in the organization “Dobro.ba”, of which he is one of the founders.

He served as the sports director of the basketball national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the convocation of the Sarajevo Canton Government, in the period from January 2021 to March 2023, he served as the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Sarajevo Canton.

He has been awarded several times for his involvement in the community. He was awarded the title of meritorious athlete of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
