heatingPrime Minister of Canton Sarajevo (CS) Elmedin Konakovic and representative of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Pier Carlo Sandei today signed a Letter of Intent, through which the Government of Canton Sarajevo accepts “program concept for limiting emissions of particulate matter and CO₂ in Canton Sarajevo”, thus becoming part of the Global Initiative called “District heating in cities”.

Prime Minister Konakovic said that this project is carried out in 16 cities around the world, and it advocates the transition to eco-friendly fuels.

He recalled that last year the citizens of Sarajevo were faced with the problem of air pollution and that the Government of CS already started some activities in order for this problem not to be repeated next winter.

The representative of UNDP Pier Carlo Sandei said that the air is a basic human need, but that in a cities like Sarajevo, heating is also one of the basic needs of the population.

“The signing of the Letter of Intent is a combination of two basic needs of the citizens of CS, as well as the improvement of their living standards,” he concluded.
