The situation with Ukraine, a country that is both outside NATO and the European Union (EU), but geographically deeply tied to Europe, has shown how security vulnerabilities in states that are not members can have direct and severe consequences for the entire continent.
However, the success of this effort will largely depend on whether the Western Balkans, as a critical area on the geostrategic map of the continent, will be fully included in that new architecture.
Precisely in this context, the Sarajevo Security Conference (SSC) is affirming itself as one of the most important regional platforms for exchanging opinions and seeking joint solutions. This year, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) will become, at the end of September, the epicenter of this critical discussion.
The conference, which will be held from September 26th to 28th in the City Hall (September 26th) and at the Movenpick Hotel (September 27th and 28th), will gather the most influential world figures from politics, diplomacy, and military structures, placing BiH at the heart of global security considerations.
Hikmet Karcic, the director of the conference, emphasized:
“The conference is not just a space for conversation; it is a bridge for building trust and concrete cooperation. Our goal is to enable direct dialogue between our experts, politicians, and young leaders with those who shape world security policy. Europe cannot afford to leave the Western Balkans outside its security umbrella, and we are here to show that.”
This edition will have special significance because Sarajevo will host three high-ranking NATO officials. Such a level of representation of the top leadership of the Alliance, in the same place, is happening for the first time after the Munich Security Conference (MSC) and represents a clear response to attempts at destabilization in the region. Among the confirmed participants are:
Admiral Sir Keith Blount, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. Admiral Blount is the direct deputy of the Supreme Commander and the second-highest military rank in the entire NATO structure.
General Aurelio Colagrande, number two in NATO ACT command in the United States (U.S.). A four-star general, Colagrande is responsible for strategic planning and transformation of allied forces, which makes him a central figure in preparing the Alliance for the challenges of the future.
Their presence is of special importance, precisely considering the current security dynamics. Although three out of six Western Balkan countries are already NATO members, the remaining ones, including BiH, have no prospects of joining the alliance in the near future. At the same time, with uncertainty about NATO’s role and regional tensions, excluding the Western Balkans from “the table in creating the new security architecture represents a dangerous omission.”
From the military industry, particularly noteworthy is the arrival of Will Somerindyke, owner and CEO of Regulus, an extremely influential figure in Washington with close ties to the State Department and the Pentagon.
His presence further underscores the importance of BiH on the security map of the transatlantic community. This year, the firm Regulus is also the official partner of the conference.
It is also worth mentioning that Cooper Wimmer, vice president of the company Strider and a man who spent twenty years in the CIA, will also speak at the conference. The company Strider deals with strategic analysis, protection of critical infrastructure, and cybersecurity. Both companies have expressed a clear intention to intensify cooperation and increase investment in the BiH defense industry, thereby strengthening domestic capacities and regional security.
At the conference, there will also be representatives of the United Kingdom (UK) giant BAE Systems and the German Helsing, leading European companies from the military industry whose market value is measured in billions of dollars. A special significance of this year’s conference is given by the presence of Sir Stuart Atha, one of the directors of the company BAE Systems. Sir Stuart, who in the company performs the function of director for defense capacities, brings with him exceptional experience acquired in the highest positions of the Royal Air Force (RAF), where he reached the rank of Air Marshal.
His presence not only confirms the high level and importance of the gathering, but will also provide visitors with a unique insight into strategic challenges and the future of the defense and aviation industry through the prism of the experience of one of the most influential figures in this field.
Harun Karcic, co-founder of the Conference, emphasized:
“This is the first time after the Munich Security Conference that NATO is sending its most important generals to such an event. Their presence is not only symbolic, but is a concrete confirmation of the serious political will of the Alliance to support the stability and prosperity of BiH and its neighbors. This is undoubtedly the most important event in our region this year.”
The Sarajevo Security Conference will serve as a platform for exchanging ideas on key challenges, from hybrid threats to regional cooperation. The presence of the top NATO leadership will give this forum special importance and global resonance, which further strengthens the position of BiH as an important actor in the Euro-Atlantic security space and emphasizes that every serious discussion about ensuring long-term European stability must include the region as well, Klix.ba writes.
