Sattler and Platzer offer their congratulations for BiH Armed Forces Day

On the occasion of BiH Armed Forces Day, the Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative Johann Sattler and the Commander of EUFOR Major General Alexander Platzer offer their congratulations to the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AFBiH) and all those serving in them.

The creation of the AFBiH was a significant positive step in strengthening security, stability and trust in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Recognising the importance of the AFBiH as a main security provider, the EU has supported the AFBiH from the beginning, most notably through Capacity Building and Training, which was EUFOR’s focus, from 2012 to 2018.

The professionalism and excellence of the multi-ethnic Armed Forces is recognised, including the important role they play in demining, the disposal of surplus ammunition, weapons and explosives as well as assisting civil protection across the country.

In recognition of the important work carried out by the AFBiH in ensuring a safe and secure environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Council of the EU adopted on 4 November 2021 an Assistance Measure worth EUR 10,000,000 to enhance and upgrade the capabilities of the AFBiH Demining Battalion. The Assistance Measure will enable the purchase of 34 transport vehicles, 34 medical vehicles and 150 metal detectors. This is the first Assistance Measure under the newly created European Peace Facility.

The EU unequivocally supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and through EUFOR is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment in the country. Any attempts to undermine the AFBiH, which is a joint achievement of the whole of the country, undermine the interests of all BiH citizens.
