Schmidt and Turner unveil ‘Dayton Peace Square’ Plaque

High Representative Christian Schmidt met with US Congressman Michael Turner, former Mayor of Dayton, who is visiting Sarajevo after being named an honorary citizen of the city of Sarajevo. It was emphasized that the message remains unchanged – peace must be protected, respected and actively defended.

Schmidt and Congressman Turner participated in the unveiling ceremony of the plaque with the inscription “Dayton Peace Square”, and signed a commemorative charter to mark the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement.

“This plaque is more than a symbol, it is a reminder that the legacy of Dayton must live on in the institutions and public life of BiH. The name Dayton will forever have great meaning in BiH… Such a place of remembrance is a reminder that peace should not be taken for granted,” Schmidt said.

He stressed that Turner’s visit sends a clear and strong message, namely that the commitment of the United States of America to the sovereignty, territorial integrity and constitutional order of BiH remains unwavering and strong.

“The Dayton Agreement ended the war, but its importance did not end 30 years ago. It continues to maintain stability and support BiH towards a European future. As we mark 30 years of peace, we must preserve it by respecting the institutions that were established and strengthening the rule of law. We must oppose any attempt to undermine Dayton. The citizens of BiH deserve a stable future after the hell they have gone through,” said Schmidt.

Turner thanked Schmidt for his commitment to implementing peace in BiH.

“Today’s visit, along with the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Dayton, is a reminder of the uncertain future that lies ahead for this country. Regardless of the enormous challenge, the negotiations, and the war that was going on at the time, there was still a sense of optimism that peace was possible. At that time, the name Dayton became synonymous with peace, and 30 years later we have come to remind you that peace in BiH is still fragile,” Turner pointed out.
