Scholz: Any Delay in EU Enlargement to the Western Balkans will make the Region more vulnerable

Yesterday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with the Prime Minister of Sweden, Magdalena Andersson, with whom he discussed the situation in Ukraine, but also the enlargement of the European Union (EU).

At a press conference, Scholz said he expected significantly more refugees from Ukraine to come to Germany and stressed that more than 300.000 refugees had arrived in Germany so far.

”This is just the beginning. The longer the war lasts, the more people will seek protection. We cannot and do not want to get used to this state of war. I urge Putin to finally agree on a ceasefire,” Scholz expressed.

Apart from the situation in Ukraine, Scholz also referred to the enlargement of the EU, especially in the context of the Ukrainian crisis and the new geopolitical situation in Europe.

”Negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania on joining the EU must begin as soon as possible. Any postponement of the process will make the Western Balkans vulnerable and out of influence,” the German chancellor said.

However, he stressed that internal reforms are needed to enlarge the EU.

”Sweden and Germany agree that the EU must embark on institutional and internal reforms in order to become capable of the enlargement process,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz concluded.
