Serbian Defense Minister Miloš Vučević said today that the General Staff of the Serbian Army and the Ministry of Defense will launch an initiative on mandatory military service in that country, which would last up to four months.

Vucevic said that military service in Serbia was never abolished, but suspended, and that such a decision could be changed at any time.

“A new assessment of the security situation has been carried out. We need new conscripts. We are not preparing for a war, but we need this so that the country will always be vital and ready to protect itself,” said the Serbian Minister of Defense.

The General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces launched an initiative and proposed to the President of Serbia and the country’s supreme military commander, Aleksandar Vučić, the re-introduction of the obligation to serve in the military, which would last up to four months, the Ministry of Defense of Serbia announced on Thursday.

The press release states that this initiative was brought to increase the defense capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces through rejuvenation and improvement of the training of the active and reserve forces.

“The proposal of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces comes after a detailed consideration of the general security situation and contemporary challenges faced by Serbia as a militarily neutral country, which would enable the strengthening of the overall military potential and the training of a greater number of citizens for the defense of our country,” it was stated in the press release by Beta news agency.
